Welcome to the Course: The Purpose of Our Course and The Course Structure

Welcome to OIS 132 - Spreadsheet Skills

This course is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of working with spreadsheets.

This is an introductory computer course. The more you work with computers, the deeper and richer your understanding of computers and technology will become; eventually you will grow to be confident in your abilities. As your confidence and knowledge expand, you will become more adept in your use of computers and better prepared for the changes computer technology brings. No one is insulated from the impact that computers have or will continue to have on our daily life. This course provides information and insight into technology - its uses, assets, and drawbacks - related careers, and the knowledge and skill set required to make informed decisions about technology in all areas of your life.

Since it is offered on-line, you should already have basic Internet and e-mail skills. Even so, for many of you this will be your first exposure to taking an on-line course.

Let me start out by stating a couple of misconceptions about Internet courses. An Internet course is NOT easier than a face-to-face class. Likewise, an Internet class is NOT more difficult than a traditional class. An Internet class is NOT independent study (or self-paced); there are strict schedules to be followed.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL WORK IS DONE OVER THE INTERNET. For this class, there are no on-campus requirements and all communications are via e-mail.

1. To complete this class you must have FREQUENT, DEPENDABLE, and CONVENIENT access to a computer with Internet connection. If, during the semester, your personal computer is not working, you are expected to locate an alternate to complete your assignments. All assignments have FIRM due dates/times and computer problems do not excuse you from meeting these due dates. As a registered student, you may use the Open computer labs on all campuses.

2. You must also have an active e-mail address and be able to check your e-mail on a daily basis for directions and information concerning the class.

3. You are expected to have experience in using Internet resources.

4. You must be able to dedicate the necessary time to complete the requirements of the class. Weekly time expectation: Approximately 3 hours reading and 3 hours on the Internet.

5. You must be able to purchase a textbook and access code for SIM NET . The textbook (?$$) and access code can be purchased in the LMC bookstore.

You will find all of your expectations in the modules that I have set up. Work through each module from the top down. You will have two weeks to complete each module. On the 15th week of class you will have a final exam.
